A high court in Britain recently upheld a ruling by a city council that had said the Christian couple were unlikely to be given any future foster children because of the pair's stated refusal to teach their children that a homosexual lifestyle was acceptable.

I personally find this troubling; as much as I vigorously disagree with the couple's viewpoint, I certainly support their right to have it. Just as easily could prospective LGBT couples be barred from foster parenting.

I also have no productive legal analysis here: such a council ruling could not occur in the United States as such as it would clearly violate the first amendment, and violate it in a multiple ways. Makes me wonder what fundamental rights there are in Britain, if a ruling can come out this way. A bit scary, to be honest.

  1. as much as i bitch constantly about bad parenting and homophobia, i agree with you. the problem is that the government is trying to influence parenting, which is the danger as i see it. although there has been many a time when i wished someone would step in and give a homophobic parent a good slap. government interference like this can also be an impetus for homophobes claiming victimization, and victimization is the most effective catalyst for political mobilization among small-minded people.

as for british rights: they don't have a freakin constitution, i do not understand many aspects of their government, they really don't have a culture of transparency but they also don't have the rampant unquestioning patriotism we do. we have a more drastic atual class divide but they are more blatently classist in many ways. anyway i digress. god save the queen, that skank.
