If you enjoy musicals, I cannot more strongly suggest picking up a copy of Steve Sondheim's Finishing the Hat (or, as I did, borrowing it from a library, since the book goes for $40 -- though $22 on Amazon). It is an annotated compendium of lyrics from his first ten or so musicals (a second volume is to follow). Reading Sondheim's reflections on his work, the process of dreaming up, drafting and tweaking a musical, and his fellow lyricists and composers is unendingly entertaining. I cannot wait to read the second volume, as I assue Sondheim will reminisce there about my favorite musical, Into the Woods.
